How to Train Your Dog in One Evening: A Review

How to Train Your Dog in One Evening is the name of a rather basic ebook on the main problems in dog training and how to solve them.

I think the title is just to get your attention, as nowhere in the ebook do they promised success in one evening! You know it isn't going to happen! I suppose what they mean is that you can read the ebook in one evening and thus get a good start on your dog training. True enough.. .the example on the webpage is of someone using one of the training techniques in one evening.

I was pleased that the emphasis is on positive methods. The authors say:

The methods described here... avoid using punishment as much as possible.... Along those lines, electric collars, pinch collars, and other equipment that can be used to train dogs will not be included in this book’s tool chest.... By using praise and rewards, you are much more likely to end up with a well-adjusted, healthy, happy dog that enjoys training and trusts and loves you.

The ebook's author is not listed but the project is said to draw on the expertise of dog trainers Kathleen Daniels, Darlene Smetena, and some Law Enforcement Canine Officers who are not named for privacy reasons. Pet Care Specialists, who have also done a good bit of training, include Cathy Gustafson, Lauren & Nancy Anderson, and Tonia Heller. If you haven't heard of any of them, I hadn't either, but I googled some of the names and they are real people involved with dogs and their training.

How to Train Your Dog in One Evening discusses each of the following dogs and problems, and right after the description, a variety of tips for the particular problem are given. I would have liked it better if they had also told how things turned out for these particular dogs, but even as it is, using examples and stories makes the book come alive.

  • Nugget: An adult dog with housebreaking issues

  • Dudley: A Keeshhond/Wheaton cross who doesn’t come when called

  • Tipper: A Beagle with an itch to run

  • Snoopy: A social Schnauzer who barks too much

  • Whitney: A Border Collie with a digging problem

  • Indy: An enthusiastic Retriever who jumps on everyone

  • Mandy: A loving Golden who forgets how to heel

  • Shelby: An orphaned Lab-mix with a biting problem

  • Riley: An English Cocker Spaniel who chews on everything

  • Abby: A Yellow Lab who is shy around people

The information provided seemed good to me. It's pretty basic but usually that's all you need, and I like that it gives you several ways to approach any one problem. It doesn't use clicker training at all. It does describe dogs as alpha from time to time but doesn't make a big deal of that way of thinking.

How to Train Your Dog in One Evening comes with two bonus ebooks:

The Potty Zone: Everything You Need to Potty Train Your Puppy in 5 Days or Less
I found this 39-page bonus to be quite good. It included crate training, and gives reasons why, along with how to do it. The section on avoiding accidents includes having you set the alarm clock for 3 hour intervals in the night, which is a good idea if not a lot of fun to do! But it pays off. I was pleased to see a couple of pages on clicker training here. Techniques covered include the usual taking your dog outside, but The Potty Zone also discusses newspaper training, leash training, and even litter box training for small dogs. Further sections discuss housetraining an adult dog, accidents, submissive urination, and more.

Dog Training 101: The Straight Facts About Training Puppies Through Adult Dogs
This is a basic 70 page ebook which is a nice addition to the main ebook. In short, a variety of topics are covered. Puppy training is discussed first (accepting collar and lead, preventing biting and mouthing, proper socialization skills, eliminating bad habits, house training, and more) and then various dog training topics are discussed in the later part of Dog Training 101.

In a nutshell, do I recommend How to Train Your Dog in One Evening? If so, who is it for?

Yes, I recommend this. It's for anyone who needs essential information on puppy and dog training. The potty training bonus makes it a good choice for someone (or a family) getting a puppy. The writing style is clear and direct.

I am a fan of ebooks when you want the information now. Their website homepages generally give you a good idea of what to expect from the ebook, and usually the books live up to their claims.

As it happens, this ebook has a particularly engaging sales page. I got curious and went through their list of things that they say the ebook has in it. I found most of them -- and agreed with them. (The ones I didn't find may have been there; it was late and I was getting tired!)

Rosana's Ramblings:

One thing I really like about ebooks compared with regular books is that if you want to research something, for example digging, in Adobe Acrobat you can just hit Control-F (or the Mac equivalent) and type in the topic you are interested in. Then you can go from place to place in the ebook quickly.

Sure, regular print books can have indexes, but this is much niftier!
