Hi Edna -- for teaching the down, have a nice few treats handy. They could even be the puppy's dry food if he responds happily to individual pieces of it.

With him in a sit position and you sitting on the floor next to him, slowly move your hand with a treat in it so he can smell it but not get to it. Bring it down in front of his chest till he follows it all the way down. He will probably not do this at first, you will have to keep trying. You can reward temporary stages if he is getting the general idea, by giving him the treat. Then gradually expect more of him.

If this exact method isn't quite right for you, by starting out doing it, you will probably get an idea how to do it.

Best wishes,
Rosana
