Potty Training Puppies or Older Dogs is Crucial

I’m getting back to revising my book on potty training puppies and older dogs. Actually, it may turn into TWO books:

  • one on how to housetrain very young puppies,
  • and one on how to train older puppies or adult dogs who didn’t get it early on.

The challenges and methods overlap of course but they are different enough that I may go that way.

In any event, it is crucial to the future of any dog that you get them housetrained. Many times, owners who don’t succeed with this give up their dogs to shelters. This is very stressful for the dog, and all too often means they will not live much longer.

The reason the methods are different is that with a young puppy it is a matter of their bodies maturing and of their understanding what you want. Taking them to their potty area every time they wake up is the single most important thing you can do. Read the rest of this entry

A Small Furry Prayer

I read voraciously, and dog books go right to the top of my piles, but the first time I tried I just couldn’t get into A Small Furry Prayer: Dog Rescue and the Meaning of Life (Amazon link), by Steven Kotler.

The second time I picked it up, I read all afternoon and finished it all in a couple of days. I really didn’t want it to end. Read the rest of this entry

I just came across a great clicker training resource — and that is the name of the site, clickertrainingresource.com. Lily Lim has at this point  18 clicker training articles listed on her page http://www.clickertrainingresource.com/free-dog-clicker-training-articles.html — don’t be surprised when those links take you to another site called hubpages. You are still reading her articles. As someone with a top obedience dog, she knows her stuff.

I discovered this site because Lily made a comment on an article of mine about dog clicker training, one that I had posted at ezine articles.(That’s a site where you can get articles for your own dog blog, or write ones for other dog bloggers to use, by the way.)

She pointed out the importance of teaching dogs what the clicker means before using it to teach any specific behaviors.  I hadn’t really divided things out that way, and it makes sense. So I took a look at her site.

So for more on clicker training, do visit her site! She also has a free email course on, what else, clicker training.

Dog Star Daily Podcasts

I have written about Dog Star Daily before, and no doubt I will do it again, and again! It is my favorite dog training website, so I thought it was worth another shout out. Today I am going to tell you about the podcasts. These are mp3 files which you can listen to on your computer or download and put on your iPod or similar device. Then you can learn more about dog training — and be entertained — while you go out walking with your dog!

Dr. Ian Dunbar is a veterinarian and one of the main people to get the positive dog training movement started.( I’ve written more about Ian Dunbar here.) A few years ago, he and his wife, dog trainer Kelly Dunbar, started Dog Star Daily as a place to be a major information resource for dog training. There are now blogs from numerous positive trainers. Great reading. Read the rest of this entry
