What are the top ten dog training books right now? This list automatically updates every day. Now, I like keeping up with what is most popular, but it doesn’t mean that I agree with all of them or that they are about the positive dog training methods that I advocate. You can click through and read reviews to see if they would suit you and your dog, and you can check the search box here on this site to see if I’ve written about any of them.
By the way, now and then a book finds its way onto this list when it’s not one of the top dog training books but is a mystery or children’s book. Such is life!
Having been a librarian in public libraries, I love books and I appreciate the current explosion in publishing. Independent publishers (often called indie publishers) are providing so many new books that a list like this one is useful to see what the cream is. And even when a book has theories that I don’t agree with, there is always something useful in it to take away. There is always, always, always more to learn about the most effective dog training techniques!
Given that the internet is so full of free information–on dog training and anything else that you can think of–why buy a book? It’s like having a conversation with someone who is really knowledgeable about their subject. Where a webpage has limits, with a book you can really get your teeth into the subject. Also, much as I love Kindle and ebooks, for me there is is something about the physicality of a paperback (or sometimes a hardcover) book that is so useful. To pick up a book or to share it with a friend is one of life’s joys. For example, one of my favorite dog trainers is Patricia McConnell and by reading her books over time I have become imbued with her very positive viewpoint… here’s my review of her book The Other End of the Leash. And so I bring you this list of the top ten dog training books. Enjoy!
