Thinking of getting a puppy, or have a friend who is? Or do you have a puppy younger than 18 weeks? This award-winning program can help you get off to a terrific start! It’s been out as a video and is now a DVD.
What’s in the program?
Sirius Puppy Training shows you how to teach your puppy to:
- lie down
- stay sitting or lying down
- heel, on and off leash
- walk with a loose leash
- not jump up on people
- not bite or mouth people or their clothes
- think of training as fun
- develop a pleasant temperament
- and more!
Sirius Puppy Training shows renowned dog trainer Ian Dunbar and three other trainers working with puppies of various breeds and ages. Much of the action takes place in a Sirius Puppy Training class, as well as in the owners’ homes and in a dog park.
It’s a fast-paced, enjoyable program, and very professionally produced.
Who is the program for?
Just about everyone!
The puppies and their owners are untrained to start with, and you can see the progress that everyone makes.
Many of the people taking the puppy training class are children themselves — some look as young as four or five years old. This would be an excellent program for children to watch. Both kids and adults can benefit from watching Sirius Puppy Training several times.
I think that even people with a fair amount of dog experience would benefit from Sirius Puppy Training — unless they have already watched some other programs of Ian Dunbar’s. I’m a great book lover, but the DVD gives you a lot that you couldn’t get from his (or anyone’s) books.
This program does not use clicker training, but it is based on the same training principles as clicker training, so it is very compatible with that approach. Also note that it is designed for puppies under the age of 18 weeks without major behavior problems.
Why is it called Sirius Puppy Training?
Sirius is the dog star. And all of Ian Dunbar’s works are laced with humor. Siriusly!
What do others say about Sirius Puppy Training?
“Sirius Puppy Training not only kicked off the most important shift in emphasis in dog training towards early intervention, it remains the best video on the market.”
– Jean Donaldson (author of books on dog training)
The video has received numerous awards, and has been voted #1 BEST VIDEO by
- the Association of Pet Dog Trainers
- the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers
- the Dog-Friendly Dog Trainers Group
My husband and I bought Sirius Puppy Training when we got our Basenji puppy, over a dozen years ago. Within a day, she was sitting eagerly and other good behaviors followed soon after.
I did take Sunbeam to a puppy training class when she was a little older. She already knew most of what was taught in the class, but it was still worth taking her to get her more socialized to other puppies.
I didn’t realize at the time how much Dr. Dunbar has done for dogs or how famous this program was. See my page about Ian Dunbar for more about him and other programs and books of his.
I watched Sirius Puppy Training again in order to write this review, and was impressed again with how much information is packed into these 90 minutes. It touches briefly on many topics — I only listed above the ones it really goes into.
You can also get a sense of how much time a puppy needs! Well worth thinking about before you get one…
