Dog Trainer Spotlight: Leslie Nelson
I first heard of dog trainer Leslie Nelson in connection with the Really Reliable Recall™ method she developed, which is a way of training your dog to have just what it says… a recall that you can really trust. Here is her DVD:
She has been involved with animals throughout her life and has been teaching dog training classes since 1973. She has bred and shown Afghans, hardly the world’s easiest dog to train, and she has had much success with them. She also has Whippets and Standard Poodles.
Leslie Nelson is one of the increasing number of trainers who use positive reinforcement training methods. Indeed, she is active in spreading information about these methods, giving workshops and talks in many places, as well as teaching classes and private lessons and doing behavioral consultations. She has also created other programs and booklets besides Really Reliable Recall. She is a member of the Association of rofessional Dog Trainers. In the 1990s, she created a dog training program for family dogs, derived from the principles used at Sea World of Ohio.
She owns and directs a dog training center which offers over fifty classes each week and has a large staff of dog trainers with impressive credentials. Reading her Tails U Win website almost made me want to move to Connecticut to take some of the classes! That is not going to happen but I was pleased to see that she and her staff offer phone and email consultations if you are not in the area. Details are on the website.
